Silvija Kipson is a research assistant and PhD student at the University of Zagreb, Croatia. As a recipient of the MAEC–AECID research scholarship for the academic years 2009/2010 and 2010/2011, she is currently working at the ICM (Spain). In the scope of her PhD thesis, Silvija will carry out the first quantitative study of the coralligenous community in the Eastern Adriatic Sea. She will focus on the characterization and assessment of the spatial variability of one of its most representative facies (a Paramuricea clavata facies). For the first time, this study will assess population structure, reproductive biology and the health status of two gorgonians in the Eastern Adriatic Sea: Paramuricea clavata and Eunicella cavolinii. The data will contribute to an understanding of interregional patterns (at community and species level), provide baselines that will enable the detection of future changes due to various disturbances, and inform potential conservation and management. Besides she carried out experimental work on thermotolerance of the red gorgonian populations.
